LCR Easter Egg Hunt

This game was a huge hit with the family. My kids are older now, but still love to follow traditions. They still want the Easter Egg Hunt, but they don't really eat a ton of candy.  So, we thought to ourselves what do teenagers want? MONEY!!! We gave all our neighbors the game LCR for Christmas this year with a little saying
Well, this Also works great for Easter. I decided to grab 20-30 eggs and fill them with money.  You could fill them with candy or anything else instead.  The lowest amount and most common we used was quarters. Some had gold dollars, 10 or so had one dollar bills, and one had a five dollar bill. We didn't want to spend too much on the game, but you could easily add lower or higher amounts of money in each egg. It's fun to have a grand prize single egg with a much higher amount. The fun part about the money being in the eggs, is that you don't know how much is in each egg. You could be passing around the five dollar bill and not even know it. We hid all the eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt. Don't forget to include all adults and yourself in the hunt, if you intend to be part of the game. Whatever eggs you find in the hunt you get to start the game with.

(Amazon link to some great Easter eggs. You can buy a nice LCR set (Amazon Link) that comes in a tin, but I went with this version (Amazon link) so I could be creative and insert a label.  If you like the idea, but want to spend a little more money on a nicer set there are deluxe (Amazon Link) and giant sets (Amazon Link) available as well. I found these magnetic tins (Amazon Link) that were perfect for the games.  I loved the window, the perfect spot for a personalized label.)

Left Center Right Game Instructions

Each player starts with 3 tokens, but in this version whatever eggs they found in the hunt. Players take turns rolling the dice, continuing clockwise. To start: Roll all 3 dice. Each die tells you what to do with a egg. Each LEFT = pass 1 egg to the LEFT. Each STAR = pass 1 egg to the CENTER. Each RIGHT = pass 1 egg to the RIGHT. Each DOT = don't pass any eggs. 3 DOTS is a perfect roll.  During the game, players with just one or two eggs left may only roll as many dice as they have eggs (2 eggs = roll 2 dice,  1 egg = roll 1 die).  Players with no eggs left aren't out of the game.  They must pass on their turn and rejoin on the next turn they get eggs back.  The last player with eggs is the winner.

Three ways to play:

Game play goes until only one player has any eggs. That player gets to keep whatever eggs they have left at the end. A new game begins with the eggs that were played in the center.

If you only want to play a single round, play until only one player has any eggs.  Then,  divide the eggs in the center between all the players including the winner.  The winner however, also gets to keep the eggs they were left with as well.

Or you can always play winner takes all.

The girls loved this game.  I think we have a new family tradition. We had a small gathering of just immediate family for our Easter Egg Hunt this year, but you can add more eggs depending on the number of players. Just make sure there are at least three eggs per player in the hunt to start the game of with. If they end up with zero eggs they can still play. However, the player that collected the most eggs will have an advantage. This makes the hunt more competitive. We played right after breakfast pajamas and all.

10 Easter Egg Hunt Ideas

Our kids are getting older and harder keep entertained for the holidays.  A boring old fashion Easter egg just doesn't keep their interest anymore.  We love to be creative and come up with our own twist on holiday traditions.  So here's what we came up with.

We decided to have a glow in the dark egg hunt.  We thought we could use glow in the dark spray paint or duct tape. We  even wrote stuff with glow in the dark glue for the glue gun.  Just be careful not to burn or melt anything, including yourself.  We've also used glow in the dark puffy fabric paint to draw on the eggs, it comes in many different colors.  I've even seen glow in the dark wall paint.  For added fun, we thought we'd  spray paint or duct tape each child's Easter basket/bucket to glow in the dark. Click here for a more detailed earlier post on our blog and tons of ideas for different glowing items.  The kids absolutely loved it!

The kids get so much candy and sweets over the holidays, it's nice to shake things up a bit.  We did charm bracelet charms, puzzle pieces, Lego Pieces, Perler beads, etc.  Click here for a detailed earlier post on our blog.

3.Give each child a colored pail and they are only allowed to collect the eggs that are their color.  Great way to keep it equal for different age groups.

4.Easter hunt using balloons instead of eggs filled with goodies, must pop the balloons to get the goodies. *NOT recommended on grass, it might pop the balloons.

5. Jokes on You!  For older kids, fill some of the eggs with really good stuff (candy, toys or prizes) and some with gross stuff (ex. slime, vegetables or gross jelly beans).

6.  Inside each egg leave a word to a sentence or sentence of a paragraph of a huge prize.  It might be that you are taking a family trip, going to a concert, getting season passes,  or buying a swimming pool type thing.  They finders find all the pieces and unscramble the message for the big surprise.

7. Put tokens inside each egg for prizes they can buy with their tokens.  For instance a squirt gun might be worth 5 tokens or eggs.

8. Let the kids hide the eggs and the adults find them.  Kids love to feel sneaky.

9. Send them on a scavenger hunt.
Click here for a fun simple one from Mom on the side.

10.  Put funny physical things they must do inside each eggs.  For example hop like a bunny or roll like an egg.
Click here for some cutouts from Teach123.

Included because not everyone knows what they are:

A traditional Easter egg hunt is for decorated hard boiled Easter eggs in a park or backyard.

A modern Easter egg hunt is for plastic eggs filled with candy in a park or backyard.  There is usually a large or golden egg with a special prize for the lucky finder.

Hope this has inspired your creative juices, for added fun mix a few hunt into one.

Don't forget to leave a comment and share with your friends!

Glow in the Dark Easter Egg Hunt Ideas

Our kids are getting older, but still want to do Easter Egg Hunts.
We have had to start getting creative.

We did a hunt in the dark. We gave each child a small key-chain flashlight, that lit up only long enough to make the animal noise, then it shuts off.  It was actually really fun and challenging.  The kids loved it, but I can imagine more wilder kids running into each other and maybe getting hurt.

The next year, we hid the candy in the dark again.  I had the only flashlight in the center of the room.  We let the kids in.  I would spin around in different crazy patterns with the flashlight or put my hand on and off of it.  This just gave light on one spot of the room for a brief moment. Again, it worked for my kids, but they are pretty mild and I can imagine wilder kids running into each other or obstacles in the room, and possibly getting hurt.

The third creative year, we heard of people bending up a glow in the dark bracelets and putting them inside an Easter egg.  This was a real pain in the booty to pull off.  They didn't bend well and it didn't light up the whole egg like we thought it would. Not as exciting as even the previous mentioned hunts.

The fourth year. We needed eggs that really glowed.

The fifth year a friend gave us the idea to use battery operated tea lights.
These worked great.

Add a little piece of candy on the other side of the egg.

Glow in the dark bracelets have many fun uses:

You can put them inside balloons,
Make a ring toss game,
connect them into a ball,
make bracelets and necklaces,
make sculptures,
line a table,
mark the boundaries of the hunt,
put inside a treat bowl,
or string around Easter baskets.
Get your creative juices flowing, the possibilities are endless.

So, we got creative with glow in the dark finds below.

The grand prizes!

Stuff like this you could either put out the whole box,

Amazon has some really neat party favors these are just a few:
lights up fingers
Fun Glasses
Tattoos
Bouncy Balls

Finds from our local store:
Again you could put out the package or split them up alone or in a clear egg.

Light up toys were fun to turn on and let them flash.
We had necklaces, balls, sunglasses, toy pacifiers, etc.

Glow in the dark nail polish was a favorite with the girls.
As were the light up bouncy balls.

The older kids loved the LED phone chargers.

Later, a friend mentioned Oriental Trading for glow in the dark items.  We saw lots of great stuff and they even had.  We'll keep them in mind for next year.  Check your local $1 store, party stores, the internet, and the toy section of even your local grocery store for glow in the dark finds.  I actually bought a bunch of stuff on clearance after Halloween for our hunt this year.

You can even buy clearance candy after Halloween or Valentine's day for your hunt.  Just try to only buy plain candy that doesn't have holiday pictures on it.  Most candy has a 2 year expiration date on it, so check the dates on the package.

Another fun idea is to make your real raw eggs glow in the dark,
check out Youtube.*These eggs are not edible!

You can add a little glow in the dark paint to your regular cup of dye and this will help your decorated boiled eggs glow.

Have each family participating in the hunt contribute items.
It's fun to see what everyone comes up with.

Don't forget to charge everything under a good bright or black light just before you hide them.  Start the hunt immediately after to insure all items are still glowing.

Take any safety precautions to prevent obstacles or injury during the hunt and have fun!

We'd love to hear about your hunt.
